To ensure that every measurement and spec of the NSX engine is in top shape, they are assembled by hand with extreme care. While the everyday sedan might benefit from the speed of automated engine assembly, Acura’s supercar is a true piece of precision machinery and requires care in assembly.
A 3.5L twin turbocharged V6 engine represents the soul of NSX performance. The longitudinally mounted engine has a 75-degree V-bank and kicks out up to 500 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque all on its own. Factor in the hybrid system and the combined engine output rises to 573 hp and 476 lb-ft of torque.
The dual-clutch transmission aids in overall efficiency, with nine speeds ensuring your focus stays on the road to keep driving in the right gear. The first gear launches the NSX from a stop and the ninth is for cruising, with the remaining gears existing in a close-ratio 7-speed gearbox.
It’s impossible to build a suspension that handles all roads and terrain perfectly. Instead, the NSX has an integrated dynamics system that features four different driving modes that allow you to get the most out of your Acura. Choose from Quiet, Sport, Sport Plus, and Track.
Gone are the days of the sluggish hybrid; the Acura Sport Hybrid design incorporates three electric motors to boost overall performance. A pair of motors are located on the front axle—one at each wheel—to immediately transition power and reduce response time. A third motor translates the input of the 9-speed dual-clutch transmission for the NSX engine.
True torque vectoring will take you into and launch you out of every turn with the NSX thanks to Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive. The two front motors apply torque to the front wheels to guide you through a turn, accelerating out of turns faster, improving traction on the road, and cutting down lap times at the track.
The front end of every modern Acura features a pair of Jewel Eye LED headlights on either side of that iconic Acura “A.” The NSX has six LED beams coming on either side of the nose, illuminating the path ahead and offering an aggressive front-end design. Even when the Jewel Eye headlights are off, their reflectors are made to sparkle for that extra touch of class.
The NSX was put through extensive aerodynamic testing before it even had a physical body thanks to advanced computational fluid dynamics. Then it was run through wind tunnels and optimized for real-life aerodynamics, with curves that deliver triple the downforce on the rear end and a precision-balanced ride—all complemented by the durable yet lightweight multi-material body of aluminum and carbon fiber.
Even the smallest features of the NSX have been streamlined to cut down on drag, including the door handles. The NSX can detect when its key fob is near, automatically popping the door handles out from their normal position flush with the body. The door handles are one of many small touches that optimize the NSX for speed.
As the engine is geared for performance, the cabin is geared for comfort. Dual-zone automatic climate control with humidity control and air filtration keep the NSX cool, and the available ELS premium audio system brings studio-quality sound to the daily drive.
Quiet mode optimizes the NSX for serenity, passing engine exhaust through silencers and delivering one of the calmest cabin experiences. Features like an acoustic windshield, acoustic rear cabin glass, and active sound control help to deliver a drive that lets you focus on the road.
Aggressive seat bolsters hold you in place even during the sharpest of turns while Milano leather makes it easy to slide in and out of the driver’s seat. Seat and seatback centers feature perforated Alcantara for improved grip. The available four-way power-adjustable seats with memory settings let you adjust things until they are just right and have a setting for both everyday and performance driving.
NSX engineers re-thought the steering wheel, starting with an oblong shape that stays out of your field of vision and finishing with steering wheel–mounted controls. Adjust cruise control, manage phone calls, skip music tracks, and more without ever taking your hands off the wheel.
The NSX vehicle settings are quickly and easily controlled through the standard 7-inch Display Audio touchscreen. Adjust Bluetooth settings or line up your next playlist for a trip to the store or a lap around the track. When connected to your smartphone, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto apps show up right here, just like they do on your phone screen.
Set the soundtrack to your drive with a playlist from an MP3 player or your smartphone using the NSX USB audio interface. Two USB ports in the glove box and one in the center console make it easy to charge your gadgets and stream directly from them. Compatible iPhone and Android users can bring familiar apps to the touchscreen interface with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
This safety feature is able to detect when a wheel loses traction and adjust engine performance to compensate. Vehicle Stability Assist brings improved control to driving conditions that would otherwise be unfavorable.
Even one under-inflated tire can result in drastically unpredictable performance, the last thing you want on a vehicle like the NSX. Acura’s standard Tire Pressure Monitoring System illuminates a light on the dash when one or more wheels is under-inflated, letting you know which ones need topping off with air.
Part of the fun of driving an NSX is devoting 100% of your attention to the road, but sometimes it’s nice to take a break. Switch seamlessly from full driver control to cruise control with a steering wheel–mounted button, and switch back when it’s time to show drivers what the NSX is made of.
The NSX style has been precision-engineered and sculpted, and the last thing you want is to have a ding or a dent that mars the surface. Available backup sensors and corner sensors use sonar to alert you to potential objects when moving into a tight parking space or driving at low speeds.
Shift into reverse and have confidence backing up with the standard multi-angle rearview camera. The top-down, wide-angle, and standard views offer a 170-degree look at what’s behind you before backing up, complete with guidelines.
The NSX is equipped with state-of-the-art airbags to cushion occupants in the event of a collision, including a single-stage driver airbag, a dual-stage passenger airbag, multiple-threshold front airbags (SRS), and one-row side curtain airbags with rollover sensor.
